Folate Supplements

What Is Folate?

Folate is s water soluble B-vitamin. Sometimes known as Vitamin B9, it is found naturally in a range of foods. It is recommended that adults should have 400mcg as their daily amount of Folate a day. Though this does change with age and during pregnancy and lactation.

What Does Folate Do?

Folate has an important role in the body, as it helps to make healthy red blood cells. A deficiency can cause the body to produce abnormally large red blood cells that do not function properly.

Folate Benefits

As well as its role in making red blood cells, folate has a range of additional potential benefits, such as:

  • Reducing the risk of depression;
  • Helping to maintain a healthy heart;
  • Increasing brain health;
  • Reducing the risk of depression.

Is Folic Acid The Same As Folate?

A common question around B9 is whether folate and folic acid are the same. These names are often used interchangeably, but they are not, however, the same thing.

Folate and folic acid are both versions of vitamin B9. However, folate is the naturally occurring version, whereas folic acid is the synthetic version.

Folate Deficiency

If you do not reach the recommended intake of B9 regularly, you may develop a folate deficiency. According to the NHS folate deficiency symptoms include:

  • Muscle weakness;
  • Tiredness;
  • Mouth ulcers;
  • Memory issues;
  • Pins and needles;
  • Sore and red tongue.

Folate Supplements

At Natural Health Plus, we have a range of supplements, such as tablets, that include Folate. We use 5-MTHF Folate, which is the active form of folate acid.
