Omegas

What is an Omega?

Omegas are dietary fats of which there are three: Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9. They are all fatty acids, and each offers biological health benefits. Though it is possible to achieve appropriate levels through a healthy diet, it can be difficult to maintain the right balance of the three. Imbalanced levels may contribute to a variety of chronic diseases.

Omega-3

Omega-3 is a specific family of essential fatty acids with several different types. The three main types are ALA, DHA and EPA. These polyunsaturated fats can't be synthesised by our bodies, and so are classed as a crucial nutrient which must be gained through diet or supplements. They are a vital part of our cell membranes.

Omega-6

Omega-6 is another essential polyunsaturated fatty acid which has to be derived through diet. They are mainly used to produce energy, but the resulting chemicals are more pro-inflammatory than those produced by Omega-3's. It is important to maintain an appropriate ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids, recommended as 4:1 ratio.

Omega-9

This is a non-essential fatty acid, found in abundance in most cells in the body. They are monounsaturated and are also found in a variety of food. In order for the body to produce this fatty acid in appropriate amounts, Omegas 3 and 6 must also be present.

Good sources of Omegas

Oily fish is the best natural source of Omega-3's. Though they are also found in fortified eggs, nuts, some oils and green leafy vegetables. Omega-6's are very commonly found in the UK diet, with high levels in fast food, refined vegetable oils, food cooked in oils and many more. This can lead to an Omega imbalance. Omega-9's, though produced by the body are also found in nuts and seeds.

What are the benefits of taking Omega-3 supplements?

An appropriate balance of Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 offers the body an enormous amount of benefits including:

  • Reducing symptoms of depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder;
  • Aids normal brain development and function;
  • Improving heart health;
  • Reducing blood pressure;
  • Assisting with weight management;
  • Fighting inflammation;
  • Preventing dementia and memory loss.

Though it is best to get your daily recommendation of Omegas through your diet, the average UK diet doesn't contain enough Omega-3's and has too much Omega-6. Taking an Omega-3 supplement can help to rectify an imbalance and prevent deficiencies.

Natural Health Plus offers a selection of UK supplements including a combined Omega 3, 6 & 9 fish oil capsule or vegan hemp oil for those who wish to increase their levels of Omega-3 in an efficient, simple way. Browse our range to find the right omega supplement for your diet.
