Papaya Leaf Extract

What Is Papaya?

The Papaya tree originated in Central America and is now cultivated globally in tropical and subtropical regions. It bears ripe melons which are ingested for their juice and flesh, as well as edible leaves and shoots. Though often used as a sweet flavouring, the papaya leaf in its unripe form also offers a sap which when dried, it is known as "crude papain". The properties of papain include clotting and protein-digesting.

What does Papaya do?

The colourful fruit, along with the Papaya leaves and roots are an excellent source of nutrition, containing Vitamins A, C, E, B and K, as well as fibre and potassium. These essential nutrients mean that Papaya offers a range of health benefits.

Papaya in its different forms has been used to treat a variety of disorders including:

  • Skin growths;
  • Haemorrhoids;
  • Constipation;
  • Intestinal worms;
  • Rheumatism;
  • Wound healing.

Papaya Benefits

Several antioxidants can be found in Papaya, including zeaxanthin and beta-carotene. These antioxidants are said to have several health protection properties including:

  • Decreasing the risk of and reducing the progression of age-related macular degeneration;
  • Reducing the risk of developing asthma;
  • Protecting against prostate cancer.

The fibre content may improve blood sugar, blood glucose, lipid and insulin levels, which in turn help maintain healthy digestion and regular bowel movements. This fibre, in conjunction with the assorted vitamins and potassium found in the Papaya, may help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The papaya leaves themselves contain a wide variety of enzymes such as amylase, protease, chymopapain and papain. These enzymes help our bodies to extract more nutrients from our food which can then improve digestive health. The leaves also contain up to 50 amino acids, which help to benefit skin condition.

Who should take Papaya supplements?

While it is always best to achieve recommended levels of nutrients through a balanced diet, it is not easy and so supplementation may be required. If your digestion needs improving or if your levels of Vitamins A, C, E are not high enough, then it may be worth considering taking a papaya supplement. It is available in various forms which use the papaya leaf extract including tablets, capsules, topical creams, and tea.

Natural Health Plus offers a wide range of supplements, including an enzyme combination capsule containing Papaya leaf.
